Let's Talk About Sight Words

As I am starting to think about the school year coming up and what theme I want to decorate my room in this year, I started to think about sight words. This made me wonder, how does everyone handle sight words that go home? I have heard some people use word rings and others use pocket words. Kelly and I have always used a "Sight Word Can". We ask parents to donate empty and clean frosting containers and then we put a cover around it that looks like this:
Then after sight words are taught in the classroom we send them home on a sheet of paper for the parents or child to cut out and add to their can. We also send home some ideas of how to use the sight words and game they can play so it isn't just boring flashcards. Ha!! We would love to hear about all of your wonderful ideas and how you help young children learn their sight words!

  1. I love the can idea. It puts an exciting spin on sight word practice. I may do this next year. I use my sight word packets for homework to help my students learn the words.

  2. I use sight word chants on popsicle sticks to help my students learn new words. They have a ball with it. I love the idea of this can to extend this activity. :)

  7. Just started following your blog. In my classroom ,I have the sight words written on feet and glued to a long piece of bulleting board paper.I had it laminated. The kids love pulling it out and walking the words....saying the word as they step on it.
Looking forward to more great ideas. I love the frosting can idea. right now we send home little flash cards they are in back of our Journeys book to practice.
